    Default Coachella 2018

Any Borderers attend Coachella this year? If so, how was your experience? Hopefully you had a good time ... or at least a better time than this article suggests

    Cool Re: Coachella 2018

Never have been to Coachella, and not planning to go. Would've likely enjoyed seeing the Stones/Petty/Everybody else in rock event, but otherwise, I find that the acts presented just don't do much for me.

That doesn't mean they're not terrific artists; it just reflects my own warped tastes in music. And I generally don't go to shows I'm not working, mainly because I can't just relax and enjoy the thing.

I hope that the people who went to Coachella had a cool time, and are planning to go again. Live music events, no matter who the artists are, are positive events and should be encouraged.

(OK, Golden Voice, where's my $20?)

I agree that live music events are a good thing. However, I personally would much rather go to a concert than a music festival for all the reasons mentioned in the article that Dawn posted. First of all, the price of the festival tickets are too high for me because I'm usually only interested in seeing one act. And I'm just not into having to stay in one spot all day to get a decent view of my favorite act, only to be charged at by a swarm of rude people right before your band comes out and having to fight tooth and nail for the spot that you 'protected' for many hours. I guess I'm too old for that now.

Being 59 years old now, I agree with you Dreamer. But being a teenage concert goer in the 70's, I will admit to being one of the rude ones to squeeze in up front to see "my band". At the Riverfront Stadium concert in 1978, my friend and I started out in the bleacher seats for Eddie Money and part of the Steve Miller Band. Towards the end of the Miller set we went out on the field and worked our way up pretty close to the stage for the Eagles. We just had to make sure we got in front of guys because they never cared. Girls would have probably ripped our hair out! That is why concerts in the 70's were pretty much a teenage or young 20's domain. It was eat or be eaten! It didn't just happen at big festivals though. Many concerts then were typically festival seating which meant that bodies were always squeezed in tight up front. Glad I went for it then when there were no old people (30 and over!) who had manners!

I prefer smaller venues - don't mind House of Blues Vegas or certain casinos though I know the acoustics can be a real disappointment and the audience can be rowdy -I just try to go with the flow. Theaters like the Wiltern in LA and the Walter Kerr in NYC are also fantastic.

My biggest issue with festivals and stadiums/arena size concerts apart from the cost of good seats is the PARKING crunch, the long bathroom and food and beverage lines, and the walking all over the place. I just don't have the desire to expend the money or the energy. For those who do have the desire and the energy I think these multi-band festivals can be a lot of fun and worthwhile.

I do love the Hollywood Bowl and Red Rocks. Simply gorgeous amphitheater settings and great sound. Well worth it.

One venue you will never see me at are the ones that float - fun as they may be. I don't care who the artist or band is -- Rock and Roll Cruise Concerts are NOT for me.

Yeah, My My - I try not to get too bent out of shape about it because I think the expection is that people are going to rush the stage at festivals. It's pretty much the same thing at any general admission concert, which is why I prefer to avoid them. I'll never forget a lady at a festival that several of us Borderers went to in Aspen - it was a Party of Two show that Glenn and Joe headlined one year. This lady was determined to stay put in her beach chair as people started rushing. I warned her that she may want to move, but she got angry because she had been sitting there all afternoon. Go figure.

I camped out all day at JazzFest to see the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac as close as I could (although I was still behind the "premium" area of people who had paid several hundred dollars for the privilege of being that close without all the pain). When people tried to shove past me, they got shoved back!

It was a lot of pain and suffering spending all those hours in the merciless New Orleans summer heat, and I wasn't super-close to the stage thanks to the VIP area, but it was only $70!

The above reasons - crowding, parking, trying to get a drink and then finding a bathroom, ticket costs - are some of the things that propelled me into working in the live music business...
