Do we have any bass players here among us? I wonder if this little clip is representative of Randy's playing style in general - specifically, I'm wondering if it was typical of him (or bassists in general?) not to use the pinky on their left hand.

Guitarists use all four fingers, and occasionally the thumb gets involved too, if your hands are big enough to wrap around the neck, like the notoriously limber Jeff Beck.

I think you're onto something there. You don't hear a lot of dueling guitar solos anymore or even just guitar solos except for some country music. But maybe I'm out of the loop.

It's not just us. I remember Sheryl Crow saying she turned to country music because it's the only place you can still hear guitar solos.

I've also noticed that more challenging music - whether it be Yes, Rush, Steely Dan - which used to be the mainstream, is now sometimes referred to (affectionately) as nerdy. It's now seen as unusual to be intelligent and proficient in your craft. Idiocracy, here we come.

Were the Dan always considered nerdy? I'm going OT, perhaps I should pose this question in the Other Bands section.

I was watching Donald Fagen's instructional DVD last night. He breaks down the structure of a few of his songs, including "Peg" which was a massive radio hit back in the day, you couldn't escape it. Same thing with "Deacon Blue" - these were jazzy tunes with challenging arrangements. I was a little kid when these songs were popular, and I loved them. It never occurred to me that it was too adult or off-putting in some way.

But I digress. How 'bout that Randy! Man, he's great. Here's a rare photo of him playing a black Hagstrom, just a few months before he left the Eagles - I'm estimating summer of '77.

As I said, I was only kidding. I heard SD a lot growing up (due to having older siblings) but I was a kid and hardly paid attention to things like line-ups, albums, production, street cred or anything like that. Please don't post a new topic, "Delilah posits that Steely Dan had a nerdy reputation, do you agree?" I readily admit I know nothing.
