My Fighting Illini played a miserable game Wednesday night on their home court, the Assembly Hall, and this was the headliner the next morning.

I have just been trying to catch up reading a lot of threads after a very hectic week. PM - I love the newspaper headline - that's a keeper!

Yesterday, my family was in a music store buying Ethan an electric guitar and accessories for his 13th birthday...and at the front counter, they were selling 'pennywhistles!' I've always known them as recorders, but basically they are those little wind instruments that grade schoolers first learn on in music class. Never knew them as pennywhistles before!

I thought pennywhistles were different from recorders also. Hmm!! Research needed I guess.

Oh, how I wish, but quite the contrary, GA. My mom had minor surgery this past week. Physically, she made it through the procedure very well. However, for Alzheimer's patients, nothing is 'routine', so it was a challenge. Since she was unable to go to day care, I had to care for her every day. But to bring this back on topic a little, the only thing my mother will now watch on television is the Farewell I DVD, so I did get to hear that quite a bit this week. See there really is always a silver lining.

OK, did some research...Pennywhistles and recorders are in the same family, but not exactly the same instrument. Pennywhistles are also called tinwhistles, and are usually made of metal. They have 6 holes, and were commonly used in Irish folk music. Recorders are usually made of wood (except for the ones used by grade schoolers, which are made of plastic), and have 7 holes. They were used from Medieval times to the current times, throughout the rest of Europe (as well as the US).

On the left is a Tin Whistle, usually in the key of D it has a full range of 2 octaves, is usually easy tolearn and play and only costs a few euro. Many people buy them as Irish souvenirs!

On the right is a (descant) recorder. It is in the key of C. It has an 'airhole' at the back unlike the tin whistle and also an extra hole at the base. Again the basic student models are inexpensive. Many kids who do well at it move on to the more challenging instruments like the clarinet and oboe as the fingering is pretty much the same.

    Hope that helps the research!!
