I had to Google the word "fringe". I'd honestly never heard of it before. You are right. Bangs are the American term for the front part of person's hair that falls over their forehead.

    As for that photo, .

Really? I thought it was a well known word in America as it's the title of one of the songs from the musical, Oklamoma - 'surrey with the fringe on top'.....but maybe you're too young to have even heard of Oklamoma, the musical , that is????
...Well it sure makes you wonder the things that some people will say. They can see black and white but they don't seem to notice the grey...

That definition of the word isn't used, at least not in the rural American south. Fringe means loose strings or excess strings on clothing. I've heard of Oklamoma the musical, but I don't know anything about it or any songs from it.

Well, it's not really important - just find differences in language interesting.

    LOVE 'mushroom' Don

I agree that the differences in British English and American English are interesting.

Which leads in nicely to some Cowboy Don pictures

"Fringe" is a common word in the US, but only when used to describe fabric - the way it's used in the song. It's never used in the States to describe hair. (We do sometimes use it as an adjective as well, meaning something extreme or out of the mainstream - ie "he's part of a fringe group").

Just a little piece of info if anyone is interested!
