    Default RIP Chinua Achebe

Chinua Achebe, the author of Things Fall Apart, has died at 82.

It seems most of the authors whose works I assign to students have died; in fact, in my World Literature class, Achebe was the only living author whose work we covered. It makes me sad that he's gone now as well. He was one of the greats.

I read Things Fall Apart when I was doing the School Certificate when I was in my fourth year of high school (I'm sorry but I don't know what the Britsh or American equivalents of this is but for British people it's two years before O & A levels). I thought the book was brilliant (and the title comes from my favourite poem, Yeats' The Second Coming) but I never read anything else he wrote. He was a pioneer of African literature & it's a shame he never won the Nobel Prize.
