Re: CenturyLink, Omaha, NE - 9/05/2014
I'm exhausted and exhilarated AND kicking myself for not doubling back for the show in Des Moines tonight! (The only reason I didn't go was that my cat has been boarded for two weeks and had dental surgery yesterday & I really felt I needed to get her home.) This was my first - and probably only HOTE show unless they add more US dates next year. All I can say is FOR HEAVEN SAKE, GO! I saw them several times during LROOE but this show can't compare. I will say this: a lot of the reviews have panned the first half of the show because of the pace and format, and if you haven't been to a HOTE show, it's a stark difference from what we're accustomed to seeing so I can understand where these critics are coming from. But this is the Eagles at their finest!
I was in Section C, Row 3 right in front of Timothy and Bernie. Spectacular view for a TBS die-hard like myself! But so overwhelmed by the whole thing that I forgot to mention this to VA last night. As they were stepping up to the mikes to sing Already Gone there was a lull and I hollered "GLAD YOU'RE BACK, BERNIE!" He pointed and smiled, then when they finished the song Timothy said something to him and they looked in my direction so I blew Timothy a kiss. He smiled and nodded, and while I'll never know for sure if they were looking at me, I can always hope!
Like VA, I was a bit concerned when Don and Glenn started SN because Glenn's harmony sounded a bit weak. But as each member took their place on stage Glenn sounder better and by the time Joe walked out they were steam-rolling and never looked back!
Witchy Woman blew me away. I'd seen a clip on YouTube but couldn't get a good feel for it. Seeing/hearing it live is a game-changer. From the first downbeat you KNOW you're experiencing something new and awesome. It's edgy, it's sharp and I loved it.
DD/D reminded me once again of why I fell in love with these guys in the first place all those years ago. The story, the intricacies of the harmonies, the whole package! And when they get to the end and sing the "desperado' refrain you wish it could go on forever because it is so beautiful and rich and full of passion. I was mesmerized!
I have to admit that when Bernie was on stage he really gave Timothy a run for his money with me! He's just as strong and charismatic as when I saw them back in the 70's and my heart skipped a beat when he walked out for the first time. In the end Timothy won with me. And Joe was a star all by himself...I don't think anything else needs to be said about Joe except that he was on fire.
Security was all over my section throughout the first setlist. Despite the announcement and security repeatedly telling people to keep their phones put away and stay seated, there was a gal behind me who just didn't get it. It didn't take long for her to embarrass her date (who I had initially thought was her father!). First they had to tell her to stop taking pictures and put her phone away, then during Already Gone they told her to stop dancing and SIT or they were escorting her out. She had on a VIP lanyard and was drunk as a skunk! There were also a lot of people in my row who came back late from intermission during ICTYW which ticked me off.
A few final comments:
1 - I found myself thinking of it as a 'green night' when they came out after intermission. They were all wearing shirts in varying shades of green/aqua/grey-green. I think Don's plaid even had a little muted green in it and I wondered if it was planned. Really loved Glenn's (a gorgeous aqua/cream/blue plaid) and Timothy's (green/cream).
2 - Aside from all of the old jokes, after the intermission Glenn graciously thanked everybody for their patience and cooperation during the more formal first act and then added "but that's a thing of the past' and then urged the crowd to sing along on The Long Run. (Our section had been singing along all night!)
3 - I don't think I've seen anyone comment on this from previous shows so I don't know if I missed it somewhere else or it was something new. Don was relating some 'history' and said "that we're here is a miracle" and then motioned toward the band and said "THIS is a miracle." My thought was 'thank God for miracles'.
4 - Except for the schtick that Joe and Glenn do, there was a minimal amount of interaction from the stage last night (with the exception of Glenn and the youngster VA mentioned), not even an picks thrown into the crowd that I saw. Made me wonder if they all have a touch of whatever Glenn exhibited because Timothy seemed less animated than any other time I've seen them.
5 - I heard several people say before the concert started that they were filming lastnight's show. Except for the live screen shots I didn't see any evidence of it. Wishful thinking or may there be a HOTE concert DVD in the making?
Those things being said, IT WAS WONDERFUL! They did not disappoint, but they never do! Right now the time is 55 minutes to "Saturday Night" in Des Moines and I wish I was in Des Moines THIS Saturday night!
I just need a little downtime.........
