Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers last concert. Tom just wasn't going to cancel or phone it in. Bless his heart.

Yep. That was Tom. He loved making music, writing songs, living the dream. The pain he was in was debilitating but he was doing all he could to cope until hip replacement.

    Edited to add:

In his last interview with the Chigago Tribune Tom talked about what the band, writing, touring, etc. meant to him and how he needed to learn to slow down. He also talked about the care he took to stay healthy on tour. He was keenly aware of the challenges of being on the road and excited about future projects.

Gosh, I really wish that he didn't put himself through this tour, since he had emphysema, a fractured hip, and knee problems. I guess taking painkillers provides a sense of manageability, but that just sounds awful. He did sound great when I saw him in Berkeley, but I had no clue that he was going through those ailments. He did have to cancel a few dates, due to having laryngitis for a week.

I guess others could take this as a lesson to be wary of opiods, just like the band statement reiterated.

I didn't watch the Grammys so I need to look online for the full tribute they did, it sounds beautiful and really special.

    Excerpt from CT article:

"Petty had also planned to revisit “Wildflowers” and release an expanded double-album edition, which is what he originally envisioned before scaling it back for commercial release. He said he wanted to do a tour focusing on the “Wildflowers” material, which was especially close to his heart.

It’s what I would bet we do next,” he told The Times in his final interview, just five days before he died at 66 on Oct. 2.

“A lot of it would probably be fresh to the older fans, because there will be some songs they haven’t heard,” he added. “And there’s enough music to where you could do the whole night — you could make a whole concert out of it.”

You know this is really very touching and I do think Tom Petty is smiling somewhere!

I also think his wife, kids, beloved granddaughter and others close to Tom especially appreciate his fans honoring him in such a special, everlasting way.
