    OK, pet peeve lyric here:

"I don't mind being by myself 'cause I know you'll come on down."

Um.... if she's coming on down you're not going to by yourself so... that doesn't really count! That lyric makes no sense at all.

    The lyrics...

I like to go out every now and then
I can't wait to do it again
But I haven't had the time
    Lately
I like to step out every once in a while
I kind of like to do it in style
    I haven't had the time
    Lately
Lately I've been stayin' at home
(Stayin' at home, stayin' at home)
Workin' the crosswords, turn off the phone
(Turn off the phone, turn off the phone)
And I dream I'm on vacation
'Cause I like the way that sounds
    It's a perfect occupation
    For me
I don't mind being by myself
If there's no one else around
It's the last good time in town
Well, I could stand up straight, get a real job
Stay up late with the same old mob
But it hasn't crossed my mind
    Lately
Put on a suit, work downtown
Moon come up and the sun go down
No, I haven't had the time
    Lately
Lately I've been stayin' at home
(Stayin' at home, stayin' at home)
Closin' the curtains, play jazz on trombone
(Jazz on trombone, jazz on trombone)
And I dream I'm on vacation
Though you won't see me around
    It's a perfect situation
    For me
I don't mind being by myself
'Cause I know you'll come on down
It's the last good time in town
Lately I've been stayin' at home
(Stayin' at home, stayin' at home)
Workin' the crosswords, turn off the phone
(Turn off the phone, turn off the phone)
And I dream I'm on vacation
'Cause I like the way that sounds
    It's a perfect occupation
    For me, yes it is
I don't mind being by myself
If you don't see me around
It's the last good time, last good time in town
    ~ Cathy ~

And I dream I'm on vacation 'Cause I like the way that sounds,
It's a perfect occupation for me.

I think the guy has some pretty good weed and doesn't see a need to leave or share. Probably way too simplistic.

Maybe he really doesn't want to be by himself anymore, so it's kind of tongue in cheek, like, I can handle being by myself for awhile since I know you'll come on down. .... ......

No way, VA! Joe's rockin' the clean and sober lifestyle here!

Anyway, I absolutely love this song, and I especially love the lyrics quoted in my signature. They have been there since day one.

Well, to be honest, I can relate to this song (definitely without the weed!). Some of you have seen my posts about the drama in my life recently and it mostly involves this friend of mine who absolutely cannot handle being by herself. It's not a fear thing, just a preference. So when her husband can't babysit her (that's actually how she phrases it and she's 52) she expected me to drop everything and keep her company when her husband traveled.

I am the complete opposite, I don't mind spending time on my own. Long stretches of it if I have to. I don't need to be with other people in order to validate myself. In a lot of ways, it seems to me this is what this song is saying. He could be with other people and would be if it worked out that way. He knows that at some point soon he'll be around others but in the meantime he's OK being by himself. But, I need to think about the lyrics about not getting a job.

I'm glad this song is on the album, bringing some lightness to the lyrical department. It really is fun to hear Joe report about such a trivial thing as how he spends his evenings. Phrases like "workin' the crosswords, turn off the phone" and "closin' the curtains, play jazz on trombone" are great, funny details. I llove this song. The music complements the lyric perfectly. Very relaxed.
Oh, and the best line is, of course "I dream I'm on vacation, 'cause I like the way that sounds".

I'm with you, VA!!! Especially since I work from home, I've found myself more of a recluse and I'm ok with that. People sometimes drive me nuts. I've always liked those lyrics also, because I can identify with them also. My favorite is probably the simple phrase of, "I don't mind being by myself/If there's no one else around".... Amen!!!!

I can relate to much of it too - although with internet interaction, we're never really "alone" unless we cut off communication that way, too. I would find doing that MUCH harder.

For me I'm alone a great deal of the time, when my husband is at work & my daughter is at school, & before I was married I spent most of my time away from work alone, so I'm used to it & I understand the sentiments.
