    Default Teacher interest/incident thread?

as you know I teach very troubled kids.

Today an 19 year old Sr blew up in the hallway right before my class because he got his phone taken away...Security took him away and he was out of class for about 20 minutes (for some reason many students were absent so that gave me a little break) When he came back in, he apologized got a little work done and then started talking about why he gets angry so fast. The family is SUPER poor When he was 9, he, his mother and the baby sister were sleeping in bed. It was cold they only had a space heater and that is why the three of them were in the same bed. He said the baby was in the middle. They went to sleep and when they woke up, the baby 6 months old had died during the night . He said his mama went crazy and he kept trying to play it out to see if he caused it maybe he laid on her or something. He could describe the color of the tongue, the skin and everything. That is a LOT Of baggage to be carrying around.

Kind of puts a perspective on how troubled kids get thrown into the actions/behaviors situations we see.

My heart went out to him. All I could say was I'm sorry no one was there that could help you work it through. He blames himself for it happening. I guess when the police got there the whole family went nuts and a brother was tazed and this kid was hand cuffed and he has been in trouble ever sense.

    WOW

    What a sad story, sc.

And thanks for what you do for these kids. It takes a special person to be able to handle it.

It is really sad that this young boy has to grow up carrying around such burden - unfortunately, it isn't an uncommon thing in this country. We should all be thankful for teachers like you who are willing to try to help these kids, s-c. I know it must be very frustrating at times, but it also must be rewarding when you can make a difference. Hang in there and "keep on tryin'".

I think with todays parenting styles being so different from when I grew up, teachers are put in a lot of precarious positions. It is a tremendous amout of baggage for this kid to be carrying around since the age of 9.
Has he had any counseling for this? He obviously needs some because he blames himself and his parent doesn't seem to be helping or maybe isn't able to help because of her guilt. Truth be known the baby probably died of SIDS. I slept with my babies while nursing and never rolled on them.
You seem to be a caring teacher and he seems to open up to you. Nurture his desire to want to talk with you which will help him if he can't see a counselor. Good Luck

    oh thanks.

Some days it is very rewarding, other days like yesterday I want to just quit.

That same kid during my last hour had to be removed because he was calling another girl the B word and calling her the N word and talking about if he did her......

I just wanted to walk out the door.

Hang in there SC. It know its hard working with these kids. I worked with a boy who was left home alone with his baby sister. She was asleep in her crib in the basement when the house caught on fire. The fire dept barely got him out alive, and the baby sister was killed in the fire. It was an old house, and the wiring was faulty, but his mom and older siblings blamed him for not saving his sister. He was 10 at the time. And then people wonder why these kids are so angry and turn to drugs and gangs. We keep telling ourselves to leave the problems at the door when we go home, but it just isn't possible.

    new kid:

This is an 11th grader. With us for vague info on sexual decisions....

caught him accessing porn in Oct . Suspended him...went to hearing to expel him...he got to stay but cut his schedule to 1/2 days. No computers. His legal team said he had redeemed himself and about December they bumped him back to full school and back on the computers. Today we get a call from his mom---he doesn't even live with her ...he is in a home. Apparently today sometime he used his moms online identity and committed some sort of fraud using her id and did something with kid porn. We checked his log on and he has been getting a LOT of porn in different classrooms different times. Some pictures the girls look 10 or 12. Needless to say the shit is going to hit the fan.

We have a site technology specialist (worthless baby) and part of her job is to monitor student accounts to look for things like this...she hasn't been doing it. He gets a one on one para who has the single sole job to monitor this kid on everything he does. He is to sit next to this kid and stick by him like glue. There are pages and pages of lesbian sex photos and all kinds of other disgusting things he has been to in my class and 5 other classes. ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
