Before we started this poll, we actually did discuss calling this the band's 'defining' moments, but I decided to go with 'greatest' instead. Each of us put our own criteria around how we choose our lists, but it would be an interesting exercise to go through to see who would change their lists if we had used 'defining' moments instead. After this round ends, I'm going to go back and redo my list just for grins.

With regard to the band changing musicial directions, I've always thought it was a very significant factor in the bands success. As most of you know, I love all of their music - for me Hotel California and Desperado are my two favorites even though the musical styles of those two albums are day and night. However, IMHO, the band's appeal and longevity are largely attributable to the fact that they were able to do so many different genres of music at such a high level. It's also the reason I think the change in management and producers in 1974 was so significant - I think that marked the beginning of the shift in direction for the band.
