    Default Three Dog Night

Three Dog Night was always about the vocals....the harmonies. Folks, They've STILL got it all. They just ROCK.

Four of the original members are still playing together...The two lead singers (Danny Hutton and Cory Wells), the Keyboard Player (Jimmy Greenspoon) and the Lead Guitarist (Michael Allsup)! THEY got it together in Laruel Canyon along with a third vocalist (Chuck Negron) back in the Sixties along with a lot of other groups including the Eagles who got started in that same canyon at that same time!

The line-up of 3DN changed a lot over the years, with different drummers, a second keyboard and seemingly constantly changing lead vocalists, but they always maintained "their sound". And they STILL have it!

I really didn't expect what I heard tonight. They took the stage and had thousands of people rattling the dome over Fremont St in Las Vegas Sept 6. They played for about an hour and 15 minutes and did a lot of their hits plus some that weren't hits. But whatever they did, they hit every high note without a quiver! If you watched the Jerry Lewis Telethon (broadcast from South Point or "M"...not sure which) you might have caught them doing "Joy To The World". I think that is the one they shot.

I've been to Vegas many MANY times and have listened to a lot of groups playing here including Paul Revere and the Raiders, but NEVER have I seen so many people packed in one place to listen to a band! I got there early and tried to stake out a good spot for Verna and I to listen to the band. Man, I got boxed in and had to call Verna and tell her to hustle on down or she wouldn't make it! An hour before the show, it was already packed almost to capacity in the intersection in front of the stage. Folks, it's still very much SUMMER in VEGAS. The temp was still up around 100* at 9pm and must have been a lot hotter than that with all those people packed together. Not much of a breeze at all either. It was HOT!

I had bought this white baseball hat with red flames in raised embroidery on it...can we say "gaudy!" Bought it because it was basically white and I needed something white for the golf courses. With Verna on the phone with me, I was waving that hat high over my head so she could spot me. She did and after stepping on a lot of toes and telling people she was trying to get to her husband, the crowd let her through....but she said that at one point, she was about ready to claim just about any man as husband at that time! Can't blame her...it was insane.

There was a couple in front of me...cute lady in a black dress and a smile that NEVER left her face. I think maybe she'd had about 6 too many beers. But she was really having fun. We were all moving to the music...you couldn't help it...infectious! She stepped on my foot and started to fall. I caught her before any damage was done but she was mortified. For the rest of the show, she was apologizing "I'm SO SORRY..." Heck, I didn't have to catch her. The crowd was so packed together she'd never have hit the ground! But I didn't mind catching her <evil grin>

Doesn't matter. I'm still spinning. If ever you get the chance to catch this group live, don't miss it. They are just awesome. STILL! I know I'll be watching for show dates and will definitely PAY to see them! There are groups who have had to change up their songs so they can still reach the notes they originally sang....not 3DN! They just nailed everything.

Two songs I'd liked for them to do that they didn't do were "Freedom For The Stalion" ad "Pieced Of April". But they did do "One" and they did "Moma Told Me" and "Celebrate" and "Joy To the World".

I'm definitely going to have to expand my collection of their works. I only have "Seven Separate Fools" plus a "Greatest Hits" that I haven't been able to find. Maybe they didn't write a lot of original music, but what they were successful at was recognizing the best of the best that was coming out of the developing genre of singer-songwriters back in the day. The list of "unknowns" whose works they recorded include folks like Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman, Elton John, Laura Nyro, Paul Williams and Hoyt Axton. Plus, they had this background female vocalist, LaDonna Adrian Gaines (Donna Summer!)

Triva: The unusual name "Three Dog Night":

In Australia, Aborigines would cuddle up with a digno (dog) for warmth on cold nights. If it was a really cold night, they'd bundle with two dogs. Well, you get the picture!

Thanks for letting us know, Mike. I have always liked TDN. "Joy To The World" has always been on my list of all time favourite songs. Glad you got to enjoy them in person!

I filled in a lot of information in the original post. I'm pretty jacked about this group. I know they didn't do a lot of their own original material, but man could they sing....still can!

I tried to upload a few phone photos I took during the concert, but it's hopeless with dialup. I have a wireless card, but the hotel charges $9 a day to use it. I don't need it that bad <LOL>. I'll upload the pics and a couple of short videos I took during the concert. I've no idea how they either look or sound as I have no software that will play MP4 and I'm darn sure not going to download and install anything using this slow connection.

I took this Tuesday. I was prompted to do so after waking up Tuesday morning with the sound still reverbrating through my brain from the Fleetwood Mac Tribute Band. "Stevie Nicks" had a good voice that came sort of close to Stevie's. "Lindsey" was good on guitar and good vocals but didn't have a voice flattered Lindsey's in timber! "Christine McVie" played and sang great...don't know if her accent was authentic or not, but she did sound like the real thing! "John McVie" sounded EXACTLY like John! He didn't sing, but man could he play bass! They had two additional performers, one on acoustic and sometimes electric guitar and another on keyboards.

All put together, they sounded very much like Fleetwood Mac....except for a couple of Lindsey's solos. The crowd was into it and it was very enjoyable. But it was NOTHING like the crowd that got into it at the 3DN concert the night before.

Here's the picture from our Hotel Room at 4-Queens. Oh, one comment on the gaming...I had a $50 Perk from Binion's for Slot Play. Couldn't use it on the tables (i.e. Blackjack). I put the machine-money into a Video Poker machine and after playing down about half of it, I hit Quad Threes with a Deuce kicker for 800 credits ($200.00). Thank You BINION'S!

Oh well, it doesn't look like it's going to show up. You can see in in my albums here on The Border on my profile.

Here is a link to a cell phone video of part of one of the Three Dog Night songs I took. I have no idea how it looks or sounds. I'm on dialup and it took a half hour to upload it <LOL> I'll view it and probably delete it when I get home. I can't imagine it being of very good quality

Mike, the audio & video quality are very good! the only problem is that you are so far away from them, we can't see the band . They do sound great though. Thanks for posting!!

Sounds like a great show, Mike! Thanks for telling us all about it.

I just finished reading Chuck Negron's book Three Dog Nightmare. It's amazing that he is still with us after being a drug addict for 20 years. Since he is the voice I would want to hear singing One, Joy To The World, Just An Old Fashioned Love Song, and Pieces of April, I'm not sure about hearing the rest of the band without him. I tend to only like the originals, but I'm glad you did like it. I also recently got their Complete Hit Singles on cd. It's great!

Great audio Mike! I think I've mentioned on here that I saw Cory Wells at the Decatur Celebration a few years back. It was great to hear all those songs!

    GL,

    The distance from the stage:

3DN was to play at 9pm. I actually "got there" almost an hour early. There was still some room about half way closer to the stage than I ended up however, it was HOT...close to 100* even under the canopy of the light show "Fremont Experience" that provides some shade. There was no breeze at all and like I said, it was already beginning to get crowded.

Verna was just going to meet me at the stage for the concert. Had to get in to a casino to cool down some. I came back at around 8:30 and the throng had gathered! This Street (First I think) and Fremont St have been permanently closed off to motor traffic and the stage is in the Street that crosses Fremont. Well, I was in the street but completely across Fremont from the stage. Nothing but a mass of people. Like a bosh pit on steroids!

Within just a few minutes, people were packed in behind for another block away from the stage as well and then had overflowed on Fremont as far as the could get and still see the stage. It was capacity!

Okay, I still had a good spot...in front of and pretty much centered on the stage and speakers...but, NO VERNA! When the hourly Fremont Experience light and audio show started at 9pm the band had not taken the stage and I felt my pants buzzing (cell phone ringing). Verna said she was there but WHERE WAS I?

No way to describe where I was in that crowd. She was at the exit of the Fremont Casino and I had told her that's where I was. She still couldn't see. Earlier in the day, I had bought this AWFUL WHITE WITH RED PIN STRIPE baseball hat. While talking to her, I held that hat high over my head and waved it. She saw it and made her way, stepping on toes, using feminine tactics to squeeze through telling everyone that she'd gotten separated from her husband. She did make it, but thats how packed it was.

She still can't stand to see me wear that hat, but was glad I wore it that night!

    Brooke,

I'm with you. I wish that Negron had been with them. They were still a great sounding group though. They had a lot of changes over the years with members leaving and then rejoining but the band continued recording. It's one of those bands that wouldn't sound right on every song if "all" the originals were reunited into one group because of the different singers and instrumentalists that fluctuated in membership in the band.

But Negron was definitely one of the more prominent for sure and him not being there did make a significant difference. I don't think that his absence was felt as much to 3DN as John Fogerty's absence was felt to CCR where CCR just "wasn't" CCR without him. Hope that conveyed my thoughts on that...it's a bit early for deep thought <smile>
