Re: Rock N Roll Birthdays
Happy birthday Steve! I believe he wrote the main riff to I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe), my favourite 'short' (non-epic) Genesis song. Love his guitar on the instrumentals Horizons and After The Ordeal too.

Re: Rock N Roll Birthdays
And also, as it is February 13 my time, happy 66th birthday to Peter Gabriel. Can you believe these two great men were born a day apart?

Happy birthday to Peter!
It is hard to believe that these 2 guys are just one day apart in age!

Happy birthday to David Gilmour
I love most of his work with Pink Floyd. Hope he has a great day today! (JCL, what would you recommend for someone wanting to check out David's solo work?)

Re: Rock N Roll Birthdays
David has released four studio solo albums, but I'd personally suggest starting with his first self-titled solo album released in 1978:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Gilmour_(album)
In terms of sound, I'd describe it as comparable to the classic Pink Floyd sound although perhaps a bit more blues-rock orientated (more guitar, less organ/synth), with the major exception of So Far Away which is more of a power ballad with quite a lot of piano, although the female backing vocals are quite Floyd-like. David played all of the guitar parts himself, and played almost all of the keyboards, with two old friends from his pre-Floyd days, Rick Wills and Willie Wilson playing bass and drums respectively. Interestingly Gilmour is not credited with playing any bass, which he did play on both Animals and The Wall.
My favourite song from the album is the opening instrumental Mihalis (named after his boat I believe), although I also really like Raise My Rent and No Way. Another one that is quite cool is Short And Sweet, which David co-wrote with Roy Harper - the prominent use of delay on the guitars echoes David's riffs on Run Like Hell.
Of the more recent releases, I'd suggest hearing Rattle That Lock before On An Island as it's a bit more varied - there is some beautiful music on Island but the pace is consistently slow whereas the title track on his newer album in particular is a bit more up tempo. He also released an album in the mid-1980s, About Face, although I have yet to hear that one so can't offer a personal opinion beyond what I have read elsewhere.

Re: Rock N Roll Birthdays
David played the bass on two Floyd albums? I wonder why.
I've read that Roger is tone deaf and that Rick Wright had to help him tune his bass.
