The New York Times obit gives a good overview of Mr. Russell's amazing career; they call him a musician's musician. I love the anecdote that over 100 artists have covered "A Song for You" but it took Mr. Russell just about 10 minutes to write it http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/14/ar...t-74.html?_r=0

IMO, Karen Carpenter did the most moving rendition of "A Song for You." Particularly when she gets to the lyric: I love you in a place where there's no space or time/I love you all my life, you are a friend of mine...

    Just an FYI

Here are a couple of isolated vocal tracks of Karen Carpenter. I enjoyed them all but Superstar and Yesterday Once More are two of my personal favorites.

Those are my favorites too - powerful ambiance on those songs. When I hear her, I often think of what Herb Alpert said about Karen's interpretation of songs, that she tended to give a "dark" reading of the lyrics. I don't think he entirely approved, but there's no doubt she gave it a lot of drama and gravitas.

Even a relatively happy song like "Only Yesterday" (another favorite of mine) can kind of cast a shadow.

I love Karen's beautiful, clear voice. Dawn, thanks for posting those vocal isolated tracks. I always wished I could just hear her sing without the loud backing on the records.

R.I.P. Leon Russell (and Karen Carpenter).

i often wonder what Karen would have gone on to accomplish she talked about wanting to do a musical but I also like to think she could/would have found true love and realized her dreams of a happy marriage and children.

RIP Leon -I never knew he was so accomplished and had such an amazing career.
I always thought Karen had a beautiful voice too. So sad the way she died and how young she was.

Many people don't know this but Leon's friends and bandmates organized a tribute concert in his hometown not long after he passed away. It was a not for profit event and free to the public.

The tribute concert was at Cain's Ballroom who donated the venue. Here is a short clip.

Darn it, I inadvertently came across the set list and performers for the Dec 2016 tribute to Leon Russell but didn't bookmark it otherwise I'd post the link. It was an extensive selection of songs underscoring the Tulsa Sound as well as the pure genius that was Leon. If I find it again I will post the info for those who might be interested.
