Re: 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees
Those of you who know anything about me don't need to be told that I am extremely happy this morning, and that's just for the Moody Blues.
I don't think I need to explain myself any further but will if required... :thud::rockguitar::grooving::guitar:

Great class they're inducting this year!!! :D For me very happy about Dire Straits and The Cars.

Re: 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees
Inducting Bon Jovi over Priest or Radiohead. Heaven help us.
Glad to see Dire Straits get in there. Little else to be said.

Re: 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees
What's with all the hate for Bon Jovi ? I think it's about damn time they got in. I've been a fan for over 30 years, and I hope this is the catalyst for Jon and Richie to put aside their differences and get back together. I am also very happy for the other nominees. I am upset Judas Priest and Radiohead were overlooked, but their time will come soon enough.

I like Bon Jovi too. Also Bon Jovi won by fan vote so they were automatically inductees while the others were voted by the peers. Most of the inductees that were in the top 5 (except one) became inductees this year. IMO Their are a lot of artists who needs to be in the hall, but if its true about a certain person, they will never be inducted until that person leaves.
I think I read that Richie would play the R&R HoF if they were inducted. Let's see will he talk the talk about playing with his bandmates again even if its just for one night. Maybe they will put their differences sooner rather than later.

I agree and like Bon Jovi too but I do know a lot of people that hate them. A lot are some of the same reasons you see from people who hate the Eagles and that they're overplayed and overrated. There were more that were overlooked too but they should get in soon.

Re: 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees
I don't listen to Bon Jovi myself, but when a band has been very popular for over thirty years, they must have something and it doesn't matter much IMO if some people here and there can't stand them. When it comes to Hall Of Fame, they certainly deserve to be in there. But I'm not saying who deserves to be there more than somebody else. I don't care for HOF.
-
Re: 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees
I apologize for my Bon Jovi dis, that was rude to those who like them. I'm sure my favorite artists would drive some people up the wall.

Re: 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees
Happy for Dire Straits and Moody Blues - about Time, especially for the Moody Blues. Also happy for Bon Jovi. I am not a fan of his early music but like his later stuff. I will enjoy watching the show this year.
-
Re: 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees
Me too NKIT - I can hardly wait to see the show. I have been a Moody Blues fan since the early days and hope to see Justin Hayward during his N. American tour. I love Dire Straits as well and think both nominations are well deserved and long overdue. Congrats to all :yay:

Re: 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees
It looks like Richie will be joining his former bandmates at the induction ceremony. I don't think he's going to change his mind, but a lot of them have.

Re: 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees
Forgive me if I say a few words about Dire Straits.
As I hinted in my previous post, those who know me would know how I feel about Dire Straits. It is not dissimilar to Soda & Fleetwood Mac, although I only saw them twice & have only seen Mark Knopfler by himself once.
I have been waiting for years, with increasing frustration, for them to make the Hall of Fame while other to my mind lesser bands continued to pass them by. They have been eligible for a long time, but this is their FIRST nomination, and they finally made it. The mind boggles. I do feel disappointed that a couple of ex members who deserved to be included, were not (drummer Terry Williams & saxophonist Chris White, who I saw with the Dire Straits Experience last year).
It would be a very big deal if they were to perform together again. They broke up in 1992. But Mark Knopfler & his brother David don't speak & I don't know where drummer Pick Withers is*. I can only envisage Knopfler, bassist John Illsley & keyboardists Alan Clark & Guy Fletcher doing something, but I have no idea what.
Knopfler as yet has made no comment about the induction. John Illsley & Guy Fletcher have.

I didn't know the Knopfler brothers are estranged; that's sad.

Yes, neither one showed up, apparently.
This is a great picture of Bon Jovi at the ceremony, in front of their 80s selves.

That is a nice photo - I sent it to a Jovi-obsessed colleague.

Re: 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees
I could write a great deal about what happened with the Dire Straits induction. I will confine myself to this:
For the first time EVER in the hall's history, there was NOBODY to induct the band. Bassist John Illsley had to do it himself. This was an absolute disgrace; even if the hall was unhappy that neither Knopfler brother was there, they still should have provided an inductor. Were Dire Straits THAT unimportant? Did they have no influence on anyone? I am sure, if asked, Sting would have done it.
I am told they received a video tribute along with the other inductees, but I have yet to come across it.
While I am very disappointed with Mark Knopfler's attitude to this, the bottom line is (as you can see) I will forgive him pretty much anything. However, I would now say that his chances of being inducted for his solo work are now close to zero.
Meanwhile when I listen to them I still get a 'shiver in the dark' & 'stop & hold everything'. So congratulations to them & also to the Moody Blues.

Re: 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees
I agree with you FP - I am so sorry this happened with the Dire Straits induction, it's unforgivable really.
Congratulations to Dire Straits and Moody Blues both well deserving and long overdue.

Re: 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees
Wow. The RRHOF really embarrassed themselves with that. MK couldn't have been the first no-show. Unbelievable.

He wasn't. Paul McCartney wasn't at the Beatles' induction, Peter Gabriel wasn't at Genesis' induction, and Van Morrison....well, Van Morrison was being Van Morrison. They are the ones I know about because of being fans of those acts. All of them were inducted by other people.
-
Re: 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees
Peter Cetera didn't show up for induction with Chicago either. I know I was mad about that they couldn't put their differences aside for one night and play for the fans. Oh well. I don't think Peter will ever reunite (not even for one show) with his old band.

I didn't know Paul McCartney didn't go to The Beatles' induction.
I've wondered about who they get to induct people...sometimes it is someone connected to the artist, like Glenn inducting Linda Ronstadt, or, to a lesser extent, Jimmy Buffett inducting the Eagles. But other times it seems like they give it to a random person. Why Howard Stern, to induct Bon Jovi? Why Ann Wilson to induct the Moody Blues? They had Tom Hanks induct the Dave Clark Five. Do they just pick a random famous person who is a fan?

Re: 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees
Apparently there was no time to read the thank you note Ray Thomas wrote before he died, or even to say a few words for him, because the Bon Jovi speeches were so long.
So thank you, John Bongiovi, for the detailed lecture about the history of your band. Your life story was, as you clearly were aware, what the evening was essentially about. Very much appreciated. S***w The Moody Blues.

Jeez, I did not know this! I wondered what was up and felt really sad that Ray did not live to see himself and the band inducted into the HOF, though I am glad he was aware of the honor. Ray was such a lovely, dear man, so blessed. He is forever loved and deeply missed.
------------------
In honor of Ray ... from an earlier post of mine
"Thank you for the link FP. I have seen Ray with the Moody Blues a couple of times as well and WILL NEVER FORGET him or his tremendous talent and contribution to the Moody Blues. Ray was a very very special man and while I am heartbroken he has left us I do believe he is at peace.
Here is a short video made in 2013 of Ray singing a bit of Celtic Sonant in a lovely Welsh church with a sweet kitty on his lap. Supposedly this is the same church where he and his wife Lee were married.
"Away we sail, with all our flags flying"
Carry on Ray, the journey continues."

Edited to add:
The Church of the Holy Cross at Mwnt, Ceredigion, Wales, is a parish church and Grade I listed building dating probably from the 13th century.

Re: 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees
It was mentioned in Denny Lane's Facebook page that they were going to say something about Ray, but the mics were alreay off. John Lodge did go back to the mike after Justin's speech. Was he going to read Ray's letter? It was said beforehand that he was going to read it.
To be fair, I don't know for sure whether Jon Bon Jovi was given such a long time to speak or if he just took it.
-
Re: 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees
I had not heard about the Bon Jovi speeches being too long. The only clips I’ve watched on YT were about The Cars. That’s truly unfortunate the letter didn’t get read. Supposedly Howard Stern asked to go first, so I guess there was somewhere he needed to be (?). Otherwise Bon Jovi’s induction would probably have been last, so Stern may be partly to blame.
Here are some recaps from Rolling Stone. It’s not clear to me if the inductees always choose their inductors or if the HoF people also do it. So I’m not sure if the HoF is entirely responsible for what happened with Dire Straits.

Re: 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees
The inductors are chosen by the HoF. Whether or not they have some sort of connection to the inductee is a bonus. Ann Wilson said she was a fan of the Moody Blues from childhood. We knew what the connection was with Glenn/Linda Ronstadt & Don/Randy Newman.
https://www.pressreader.com/usa/usa-...87178694490124
In any case it's obvious that Knopfler was so uninterested in the HoF that even if he had a choice about the inductor, he obviously didn't suugest one. It should then have been up to the HoF to step in (which I repeat, I believe they do anyway).
And Toni, I am sorry that Ray also didn't get the recognition he deserved. It sounds as if it was going to be the Bon Jovi show no matter who else was involved.

Re: 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees
So basically Bon Jovi bogarted the show or did the show producers mismanage the time slots? I remember during the Moody Blues acceptance speeches John Lodge appeared to be telling the drummer Graeme Edge that someone off stage was telling them he had more time and to keep talking. Didn't think much of it then but now I am wondering how the whole show was being managed. Mark and Ray deserved better than they got!

Yeah, that's a mystery. Why did they tell Graeme to continue and then there wasn't time enough to say a few words on behalf of Ray? It also looked like John kept Mike from going to the mic twice. But Mike's son said afterwards that his dad was treated great. ("Unfortunately pictures don't tell the true story") Mike's wife posted a nice picture of Mike and John. And according to Denny Laine's Facebook page all the "Moody guys" were great to each other. Maybe there was indeed some mismanagement going on and maybe the communication between HOW and the bands failed. And maybe Jon Bon Jovi was told to give a marathon speech (about 18 minutes).
EDIT:
Here you can read what Ray wrote. https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/trav...12229-s25.html

Usually (at least in the past), they would choose an artist who was influenced by the person or band being inducted. Sometimes it makes sense - Steven Tyler & Joe Perry inducting Led Zeppelin - other times, it's a bit of a head-scratcher. The guy from Matchbox Twenty inducting Chicago? OK, whatever.
Ann Wilson plays the flute and is very romantic; maybe she was influenced by The Moodies.

Hi NMB!
IIRC Ann said in her induction speech she was inspired to learn and play the flute by Ray Thomas and she discussed the influence the band has had on her from the early days to the present.

Re: 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees
Thank you, lady Dawn! :) Some classless toad on the YouTubes said Ann Wilson's induction speech was "bizarre" and all about her, whereas it should have been about the Moody's history and accomplishments.
RS has transcribed Ann's speech - it's lovely! I'm actually getting a bit misty eyed. https://www.rollingstone.com/music/n...uction-w518962
