I have no words. RIP.
I know. Can't believe that, either. Apparently, he'd been ill -- just hadn't told anyone. Wow.
OK, CBS News is reporting this now. Very sad.
Local Los Angeles station 100.3 The Sound and now Rolling Stone is reporting that Tom Petty has indeed passed.
I'm Free Falling into Nothing.

Just heard the same on my radio station out of Dallas. Said he was found unconscious taken to the hospital and then taken off of life support with no brain activity.
Sad to hear. RIP Tom Petty
Noooooo!
Just saw him in April. He was in fine form if just a bit subdued.
RIP
I'm just in shock. My family just saw him too back in June and we all knew to go now after what happened with not seeing Glenn and others who passed last year. He seemed ok then too and just so sad. This whole day has been so sad. RIP Tom.
The Guardian is reporting that TP had a heart attack.

:weep::weep::weep:
Just heard on radio again that LAPD is accepting fault at leaking bad info and that Tom Petty is still alive, but not expected to make it through the day. Such horrible news today....
Very sad news. Latest reports I see say 'still clinging to life but not expected to survive the night.
Here's a personal favourite recent song of TP's.

And my favourite TP song of all time.

Just saw him in May when Joe was opening for him - it's truly a shock. I hope he can somehow miraculously pull through but at this point all the reports seem to be saying it's just a matter of time.
To me, at least, it really seems out of the blue... he seemed so full of life in May!
I just saw that too about how they reported it early but he's not expected to survive, and it's even more sadder. Feel so bad for his family.
Thoughts and prayers for Tom, his family, friends, colleagues and fans.
Yes, it's official now - reported by his manager and daughter.
“On behalf of the Tom Petty family,” said Tony Dimitriades, longtime manager of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, “we are devastated to announce the untimely death of of our father, husband, brother, leader and friend Tom Petty. He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of this morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived. He died peacefully at 8:40 p.m. PT surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends.”
Petty had just completed an extensive tour to mark the Heartbreakers’ 40th anniversary. It concluded Sept. 25 with a three-night homecoming stand that sold out at the Hollywood Bowl.

Your spirit unbound,
You left without a sound.
Ride that Rickenbacker across the
Milky Way,
And, blaze right through Heaven's entryway!
No waiting now...

Devastating news for all who loved him. R.I.P.
So sad that another legend is gone. Love his music and hoped to get to see him someday. RIP Tom.
LT - devastating news indeed.
Any Netflix subscribers who haven't seen the 2007 documentary Running Down a Dream about Tom Petty should take a look. It's really well done.
So sad that another great one is gone. May he RIP and deepest sympathy to his family, band mates and friends.
Terrible. A great musician with a catalog of awesome songs. RIP, Good Sir.
I couldn't believe it when I heard about this yesterday. I've lovec Tom (Heartbreakers, solo, Traveling Wilburys, Mudcrutch) all of my life. Another great music gone way too soon. :( :weep:
I've seen the documentary on Netflix and echo the recommendation. A very nice document portraying a great life.
Some clips from Tom's last show Hollywood Bowl on September 25' 2017

Final song and last bow.
I do believe Tom was suffering from pain in his hip especially as he followed his bandmates offstage. Reportedly he had somehow fractured it and was under a doctor's care presumably for treatment/pain management.
Tom Petty. There will never be another one like him. A true legend in his own time .. and for all time.

Wow, I am nearly speechless at how profound this recording is of Gary Shandling filmed at Tom Petty's home. Gary died at age 66 same as his dear friend and neighbor Tom. "Life is short" - Gary Shandling
Good friends both gone too soon.

So sad and stunned to hear about this on Monday. Only 66! :( Always loved Tom Petty - he was just one of a kind - cool, authentic, American rock 'n' roll.
I'll have to check out the doc on Netflix.
USA TODAY is reporting that the coroner's office is conducting an investigation because he hadn't seen a doctor in over 6 months and that they also have to wait on the toxicology report before ruling on cause of death. No foul play is suspected.
Could be a smoking related illness since he smoked for almost 50 years but with his history, by his own admission, of Heroin usage it could be drugs.

Only in L.A.!
Sherman Oaks Galleria is honoring Tom Petty with a Vampire Walk around the mall on Oct. 19th. at 7:00 p.m. Attendees, you guessed it, are encouraged to sing Free Falling as they walk.
Stay Tuned!

That’s great, I love it.

So cool!
Finally got up enough courage to watch all the tribute videos online including his American Girl finale at the Bowl!
The man was a tune-smith that had a way with words and my favorite Petty line comes from the song About to Give Out.
"Yeah, I hit town hard last night (Daytona)......We woke up in the bushes beat to hell and nude!" Road tripping and rockin' the roll and maybe "getting wasted along the way!" Bring back the seventies!

I saw it on the national news the other day and thought it was very cool. So nice of them to do that.
I am sure there will be many tributes to Tom Petty in the coming weeks and months. Tom has a huge fanbase and many friends in the songwriting, recording and entertainment industry who credit him as a major influence in their career/success. Tom was the real thing. What you saw was what you got. He always strived to put on the best show and to produce the best records. He also wasn't afraid to stand up to the industry. He put his fans first.
