Top 10 Favourite Singers
Thanks to TBF for the suggestion. Here are mine:
1. Glenn Frey
2. Don Henley
3. John Lennon
4. Paul McCartney
5. Van Morrison
6. Mick Jagger
7. Bob Dylan
8. Robert Plant
9. Elton John
10. Mark Knopfler /Neil Young (tie)
I realise that Dylan's singing is not for everybody, but I cannot leave him out. As for Knopfler, ditto, but although he may not have the most 'tuneful' voice or a great deal of range, I defy anyone to hear him sing Romeo & Juliet and not get a lump in their throat.
Honourable mention to Randy Newman, whose singing also is not for everybody, but he does it for me.
My favourite female singer is Kate Bush. There is nobody like her, although I agree with Rolling Stone about Aretha. I don't think I can do a Top 10, at least not yet.
-
Re: Top 10 Favourite Singers
This is pretty off the cuff, but these are the ones that immediately came to mind:
1. Don Henley
2. David Gilmour
3. Neil Young
4. Tom Waits
5. Robert Plant
6. Glenn Frey
7. Randy Newman
8. Morrissey
9. Jeff Buckley
10. Phil Lynott
I'd also like to fit Jackson Browne in there somewhere. Paul Young too, at his best, had a gorgeous rough, soulful voice that I adore. More honourable mentions to Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. As for female singers, I admire Stevie Nicks, Annie Lennox, Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell & Joan Armatrading.

Re: Top 10 Favourite Singers
Hmm....I'm almost embarrassed to admit that most of my favorite would be people that hardly anyone has heard of lol
-
Re: Top 10 Favourite Singers
Well, educate us, Maleah ;)
-
Re: Top 10 Favourite Singers
I decided to give it a whirl anyway :) They would probably change tomorrow

5. Steve Perry
6. Richie Sambora
8. Bono
9. Glenn Frey

1. Don Henley
2. Russ Lee
3. Marc Broussard
4. Jonny Lang
5. Bryan Adams
6. Steve Perry
7. Kelly Clarkson
8. Glenn Frey

But my list would have otherwise included:
Marc Broussard
Jonny Lang
Kenny Hinson
Kelly Clarkson (yeah yeah I know but she's awesome!)
David Cook (again...I know....but awesome! lol)
Whitney Houston (I know a lot of posters here aren't fans of the "power vocalists" or the vocal runs....but I LOVE it! :) )
Martina McBride
Stevie Nicks
Wynonna Judd
the guy that sings "Long Train Runnin'" for the Doobie Brothers (LOVE his voice but never learned his name! lol Same with the lead singer for Boston)
But then...if we're sticking to just rock 'n roll singers....that would narrow it right down LOL
-
Re: Top 10 Favourite Singers
The Doobies' singer before Michael McDonald was Tom Johnston. Boston's singer was the late Brad Delp.
The person on your first list I haven't heard of is Russ Lee. On your second list I haven't heard of Jonny Lang & Kenny Hinson.

Re: Top 10 Favourite Singers
I am reviving this topic because I never did get to it. And I was reminded of it earlier while watching YouTube stuff.
1) Jonny Lang (cannot tell you what his voice does to me!!-besides, he's good to look at)
2) Timothy B Schmit :inlove:
3) Benjamin Orr (The Cars)
4) Jim Morrison
5) Robert Plant
6) David Gilmour
7) Brian Connolly (Sweet)
8) Axl Rose
9) Chad Kroeger (Nickelback)
10) Steve Perry
Honorable Mention
Geddy Lee
Steven Piercy (Ratt)
To be honest with you, up until recently was not real fond of Timothy's solo stuff, I know sounds really funny and I'm embarrassed to admit it. I guess all the guys I have pretty much always thought of as a group. I recently started pulling out solo stuff from all the guys and gotta say I now cannot stop playing Timothy solo stuff!!! Mad at myself for not really paying more attention to the solo efforts! Live and LEARN!!!
Maleah--I finally got around to going on YouTube for Marc Broussard--he is amazing! Love the blues and he is definitely good at singing them! Wow. I will be hunting down his cd's shortly. How many does he have out? I will have to do some research on him. How long has he been in the business and how did I miss him? Thanks!
-
Re: Top 10 Favourite Singers
Willie, just a side note again. haha If you like Chad Kroeger you should give David Cook a listen! You probably have heard him since he won American Idol.....heck.....you may not even like him. haha But his voice reminds me a lot of Chad's except I even like it better! lol
Oh and I dropped you a PM about Marc's music ;)
-
Top 10 Favourite Singers
I also think that David Cook is great. And to think that he had no intention of auditioning for American Idol, he was there to keep his brother company (or so he says)
My top 10 - not in any particular order
David Cook
Elton John
Don Henley
Glenn Frey
Paul McCartney
Peter Cetera
Barbra Streisand
Rod Stewart
Celine Dion
Josh Groban
-
Re: Top 10 Favourite Singers
If I don't actually have to rank them, I think I can list my top 10. My ranking has changed throughout different periods of my life, but the core singers have remained the same for the most part (an occasional substitution may take place...)
Bruce Springsteen
John Lyon (Southside Johnny)
Don Henley
Glenn Frey
Billy Joel
John Mellencamp
Elvis Costello
John Mayer
Steve Winwood
James Taylor
Karla Bonoff
Basia
Carly Simon
(I guess I cheated and put the women in a separate list because I couldn't narrow it down below 13 too easily.)
-
Re: Top 10 Favourite Singers
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Janis Joplin
Buddy Guy
Tommy Bolin
Stevie Nicks
Dilana Smith
John Lennon
Muddy Waters
Robert Plant
Johnny Lang (almost identical to SRV...gotta like HIM)
With the exception of Nicks, Bolin and Lennon, all of these guys are Icons of Blues. In reality, a lot of Lennon's work was based on the Blues. Might make the argument that Dilana is not a Blues Singer, but my God, her voice ought to be wailing the Blues! But each of these artists, I feel put heart and SOUL into their vocals. Henley was a close runner for me, but I think the ones listed do edge him out to my particular ear.

Re: Top 10 Favourite Singers
There's a difference between "favorite singer" and "favorite overall musician" so I'm going to focus on vocal power. This includes those who may not have a technically "beautiful" voice with lots of range, but contain enough emotion in their vocals to lift the song to the next level. I'm certain I've forgotten some but this is off the top of my head (just for kicks I linked to some examples of their vocal prowess).
1. Stevie Nicks
2. Glenn Frey
3. Sarah McLachlan
4. Don Henley
5. Bruce Springsteen
6. Bono
7. Whitney Houston
8. Bette Midler
9. Billy Joel
10. Lindsey Buckingham
Honorable mention:
Ladies: Aretha Franklin, Nancy Wilson, Grace Slick, Linda Ronstadt, Kelly Clarkson, Roberta Flack, Amy Lee, Jennifer Hudson, Annie Lennox, Trisha Yearwood, Ella Fitzgerald, Celine Dion, Christine McVie, Chrissie Hynde
Guys: Nat King Cole, George Michael, Paul McCartney, Josh Groban, Phil Collins, Chris Isaak, JD Souther, Jackson Browne, Bob Seger, George Strait, Dan Fogelberg, Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmit, Randy Meisner

Re: Top 10 Favourite Singers
I know that one or two of you listed Johnny Lang in your top 10--a blues singer I don't really know. However, I read just today that his younger sister, Jesse Langseth, is in American Idol! I don't know if she survived Hollywood Week, as I don't know who she is either. However, I figured if I passed on this bit of trivia, those of you who were interested could do the leg work to find out if she had talent to match her brother's!
-
Re: Top 10 Favourite Singers
THAT might just get me watching American Idol!! Cool! I love Johnny!

:woah: That was me... that was me!!!! I love that man!! I will be doing some searching for her today on YouTube or something. Does anyone (PM, Soda?) know if she is still on there or not? What's her status and does she have the talent her big brother does?
Here's a little something I found about her and I think, from what I am seeing, she is still in, right?
http://www.poptower.com/tv/american-...e-langseth.htm
She looks to be a little red head (which I'm a little partial to). Cutie!

And here's big brother.

I am terrible with names and don't remember her face, but I'll be on the lookout now!

It says she's from Minneapolis and she's 25 years old.

Re: Top 10 Favourite Singers
EV-Now you went and got me started!!! Here's a brief Jonny history:
He was 13 when his first album was released and 14 when his first single hit the charts called Lie To Me--they called him "the 14 year old with the 20 year smoking habit" because of his voice.
He just turned 28 on January 29th. And yes he is hot---then he opens his mouth and you just want to melt because of that voice.
Here are a couple of YouTube videos but check out more of his stuff if you like a deep raspy voice like his. That is why you find him in the #1 spot on this list for me! And can the man play a guitar? AMAZING!!
Try these out!
Remember he was only 14 when he recorded and did this video. Lie To Me It will amaze you!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DayCrQWJXuI
He redid the Stones song-Paint It Black
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHMmk...next=1&index=8
This one is very recent Give Me Up Again
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uihnK...ext=1&index=34
Here is my favorite!!--not the video but the audio for it Still Raining-amazing guitar and voice here!!

Re: Top 10 Favourite Singers
Back to this topic because today is the 12th anniversary of the death of one of my favorite singers. Most of you know about my other obsession of Sweet--the lead singer Brian Connolly died 12 years ago today at the age of 52.

Willie, I have to thank you for reintroducing me to Johnny. I was a fan of his for years, since that little 14 year old kid did Lie To Me, I went right out and got his CD, and since reviewing these videos, I've broken out my Johnny Lang CDs and Im 'podding him as we speak *G*
-
Re: Top 10 Favourite Singers
He did "Lie to Me" at 14? Well, whaddya know!
TBF - what a shame for that terrific voice to be silenced so relatively young!
